→ 文章要簡潔才有力。句子裡不該有贅字，段落裡不該有冗句。比如「the fact that」是最常見的贅詞：「owing to the fact that」（作「因為」解）用「since」一個字代替就好！
〔重點三〕There is、There are、It is、These are太氾濫，請用更精準的動詞取代！
(X) It was not long before he was very sorry that he had said what he had.
(O) He soon repented his words. 他隨即對自己的話感到懊悔

II.Elementary Rules of Usage
Rule 1. Form the possessive singular of nouns by adding 's
Rule 2. In a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last
Rule 3. Enclose parenthetic expressions between commas
Rule 4. Place a comma before a conjunction introducing a co-ordinate clause
Rule 5. Do not join independent clauses by a comma
Rule 6. Do not break sentences in two
Rule 7. A participial phrase at the beginning of a sentence must refer to the grammatical subject
III.Elementary Principles of Composition
Rule 8. Make the paragraph the unit of composition: one paragraph to each topic
Rule 9. As a rule, begin each paragraph with a topic sentence; end it in conformity with the beginning
Rule 10. Use the active voice
Rule 11. Put statements in positive form

Who is、which was 之輩通常也是冗詞。

康乃爾大學英語系教授，風靡全美的英文寫作聖經《The Elements of Style》作者。1918年，史壯克教授以私人形式出版本書，供康乃爾大學的老師和學生使用，他最知名的學生──經典兒童小說《夏綠蒂的網》作者E. B. White──大讚這是一本「只用200餘頁寫作案例，就清楚總結該如何準確、簡潔地使用英語」的寫作聖典，至今在美國高中、大學幾乎人手一本。
史壯克在古典文學領域的造詣極深，著有多部研究莎士比亞戲劇作品的文集，曾受邀擔任1936年米高梅電影《羅密歐與茱莉葉》的文學顧問。他在1946年逝世，至今《The Elements of Style》影響力不墜，暢銷橫跨兩世紀、銷量超過千萬本，稱「美國最廣泛流傳的寫作聖經」當之不愧。
