The Aditya L1 Mission is India's first solar mission dedicated to studying the Sun. The spacecraft will be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrangian point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, which is about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.
The mission has the following science objectives:
- Study the dynamics of the solar upper atmosphere (chromosphere and corona)
- Study the physics of chromospheric and coronal heating
- Study the initiation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and flares
- Observe the in-situ particle and plasma environment providing data for the study of particle dynamics from the Sun
- Understand the physics of the solar corona and its heating mechanism
- Diagnose the coronal and coronal loops plasma: temperature, velocity, and density
- Study the development, dynamics, and origin of CMEs
The spacecraft will carry seven payloads to achieve these objectives. The payloads are:
- Visible Emission Spectrograph (VES): This instrument will study the emission of visible light from the solar chromosphere and corona.
- Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (EIS): This instrument will study the emission of extreme ultraviolet light from the solar chromosphere and corona.
- High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C): This instrument will take high-resolution images of the solar corona.
- Solar Wind Composition Spectrometer (SWICS): This instrument will study the composition of the solar wind.
- In-Situ Plasma Instrument (IPS): This instrument will measure the plasma and magnetic field environment around the spacecraft.
- Solar X-ray Monitor (XSM): This instrument will monitor the solar X-ray emission.
- Magnetometer (MAG): This instrument will measure the magnetic field around the spacecraft.
