Liaoning has long been pivotal in the history of China because of its strategic location on the northeast coast, adjacent to Korea and close to Japan.
Because of the area’s rich in agricultural, timber and mineral resources, it was a vital asset to those who controlled it. At various time, it was part of the non-Chinese Liao and Qing Empires, and controlled by Imperial Russia, Chinese Warlords and Japan in the late 19th and early 20th century. Liaoning was also the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty and formed a major part of the Manchukuo puppet state during the Japanese occupation in the 1930s.
This volume contains some 140 rare documents representative of the archive’s spectrum. |
